Rock Climbing

Rock climbing gives me a sense of accomplishment.

There are moments of ease, risk, and courage.

Moments of ease: Climb on.

The flow of climbing up and up and up comes as a natural sense. Looking down to see the view has drastically changed, epinephrine kicks in, and knowing the descend is next. From the ground it may not seem so high, but from the top – it looks like a lifetime away.

Moments of risk: Hold on.

Jumping…or maybe leaping is a better description. Nonetheless, jumping can be required to reach the next hold – for that moment, the midair experience can be a little frightening. The hardest part is making the jump in the first place. Risk is exciting and scary tied together with a bow. Reaching the next hold is exciting, but scary to let go of security.

Moments of courage: Continue on.

Muscles shake, forearms are in pain, and fingers are stiff, but continuing on or falling are the only options. It is easy to give up knowing someone is holding on to the rope. Continuing requires courage – working with yourself through the pain and difficulty is when growing occurs.

Making it to the top means you climbed on in the first place, you held on, and you continued when things got tough.

That is accomplishment – that is rock climbing.
